PAL Conference
(Preparation for Adult Living) After a complete training
program, volunteers will guide the participants
through the life skill stations and enjoy lunch with
them. NCJW Houston Section members volunteer as
“friendly neighbors” at the one-day “Independent
City” Conference and provide backpacks filled with
school supplies and other gift items that help make
this day special for all. This is a “hands on”
learning lab setting presented with Child Protective
Services of Harris County, for children aging out of
the foster care system, ages 16-18. This
program is designed to teach them about the
responsibilities of living independently.

AVDA (Aid to Victims of
Domestic Abuse) Every Christmas, NCJW GHS
provides holiday gifts cards donated by our members
for the mothers and children who participate in
AVDA’s programs. NCJW established this local nonprofit in 1980. The agency provides services such as advocacy, legal representation, batterer intervention counseling and community outreach and education. |

HIPPY – Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool
Youngsters NCJW members sit on the
Hippy Advisory Board and attend quarterly meetings.
NCJW is represented at the annual HIPPY graduation
and partakes in the festivities. This internationally
recognized family-based literacy program was
introduced to Houston by our members. The mission is
to empower and teach parents to be the primary
educators of their preschool children in order to
prepare them for success in school and beyond. NCJW
GHS’s contributions have been used for reading
materials, field trip transportation and
graduations.

JOY OF READING at The House of Tiny Treasures The Joy of Reading is led
by the Daytime Branch. Volunteers usually
carpool from the JCC and read to the children from
10:00-11:00 am on the second Monday of the month.

this valuable project. New and gently read
children’s books are always greatly appreciated. This Search program is a
fully accredited childcare facility for children,
ages 6 weeks to 5 years, of homeless parents who are
currently in school and/or job training or
re-entering the work force in Houston. NCJW’s own life member,
Shelly Cyprus, created SEARCH Homeless Services in
1989. Its purpose is to provide Houston’s homeless
with services, day shelter, and resources they need
to successfully re-enter society. SEARCH’s mission
is to create hope, provide opportunity and transform
lives.

HEALTH FAIR at The House of Tiny Treasures NCJW volunteers spend the
afternoon entertaining the children and their
families with fun carnival-like activities while
their parents visit with healthcare vendors to learn
about available services, preventative health care,
and developmental health needs for their children.

HUMAN TRAFFICK STOP GHS’s newest Section
project addresses the civil crime of both labor and
sexual human slavery. NCJW GHS has established a
Provisional Supply Bank at the International YMCA,
which provides non-perishable foods, baby products,
household supplies as well as blankets and warm-up
suits provided by NCJW members for the trafficked
clients who are helped by this YMCA, the only such
“Y” program in the country. NCJW will be hosting a
Human Trafficking Seder September 2011 as part of
the Faith & Freedom Weekend for the Houston Rescue &
Restore Coalition.

Donny Workman Memorial Lunch Program Donny Workman volunteers
can cook, serve, donate food and/or
home-cooked casseroles or leftovers from special
occasions as well as soft drinks and paper goods,
donate money for food, befriend the art
students, visit with the art students during lunch,
every other week, at the Art League. Donny Workman Memorial
Lunch program refers only to the NCJW lunch program
for participants of a Healing Art class for adults
with HIV/AIDs and Cancer Related Illness.

Women's Seder The NCJW Passover Seder
has provided an inspiring, educational, and
spiritual experience for members and guests of the
Houston community, affiliated or not affiliated,
young and old. This intergenerational event
celebrates the women’s role in the Exodus and
emphasizes the women of the Passover story.

NCJW Girl Power Zoo Day Volunteers will attend a
training session, can help plan the event, develop a
Boost Book, takes the girls to the petting zoo,
organize and play games, and serve lunch. This Houston Zoo Day is a ½ day camp reunion for up to 25 girls, ages 7-11, who have been sexually abused and have attended a recovery program at Camp Victory Texas, which addresses their self-esteem and other issues. 2011 NCJW Girl Power Day
is Sunday, October 23, from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. |
Dr. Leo K. Feine & Daniel Lee Mattis Scholarship
Funds A program that awards two
(2) scholarships funded by Career Branch activities
for students, entering their third year of college
or a graduate program, who are preparing for a
career in the fields of education, health and social
welfare or Judaic studies. This program is in
honor of deceased family members of Career Branch
members.

Read & Chat at Seven Acres Volunteers, through
discussion groups and reading sessions, share
companionship, enrichment and mental stimulation to
residents at Seven Acres Home.

Education Matters During this week-long
event NCJW volunteers help set-up all of the school
supplies, apply NCJW stickers to specific items and
then schedule specific days and times to distribute
them to the parents. This is an umbrella for
education-related projects to help students in the
West Houston area. WHEB has participated for three
years in the West Houston Assistance Ministries
(WHAM) “Back to School Supply Drive” by donating
money to help purchase and distribute school
supplies for 650 at risk children in the Houston,
Spring Branch and Alief areas.

Expanding Your Horizons Volunteers for Women in Math
& Science Volunteers assist the
Speakers during the this all-day, classroom workshop
by passing out materials, answering questions and
guiding the students to their specific areas. The 2012 Conference will
be held on March 3 at Northbrook Middle School.
Lunch is provided. The Expanding Your
Horizons in Science and Mathematics Conference is
designed to nurture the interest of middle school
girls in math, science and technology and expand
their career vision in these areas. The girls have
the opportunity to meet and interact with women
using math and science in their professions and
participate in fun and exciting hands-on workshops.

Call-to-Protect Cell Phone Collection Used cellular phones are
collected then turned into Verizon and sold to be
refurbished and reprogrammed and given to needy
women. The funds collected by WHEB are then
used to support other community service projects.
