CHAIR'S MESSAGE
“What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate”
“Cool Hand Luke” 1967
Communication is the activity of conveying meaningful information. Communication requires a sender (Governing Board, branches, individuals), a message (what’s needed or actions taking place), an intended recipient (Greater Houston Section membership), and that the communicating parties share an area of communicative commonality, and, in the case of the GHS, that would be performing Tikkun Olam through our community service projects. The communication process is complete once the receiver has understood the message of the sender, or in NCJW terms, which projects are available that pose an interest to the members and make them want to reach out. Once this happens, the message has been effectively communicated.
Communication, the key factor in the success of any organization, is not as easy and simple as it sounds. However, GHS now has a powerful tool--the brand-new website-- which if utilized, can increase our ability to communicate effectively and efficiently within a branch, from branch to branch, throughout the Section and to the community at large. The new GHS website, launched October 31, 2011, www.ncjwhouston.org is your resource for “Everything GHS” and National.
Several months ago, the Community Service Ad Hoc committee recommended, and the Governing Board Chairs agreed, to put a freeze on current projects to give branches and their memberships an opportunity to delve into the possibility of more hands-on contact with the agencies we support. “Our goal is volunteer engagement so our members, ‘see, taste, and feel in their souls’ the need for supporting our projects with both time and money” as was so aptly put by an NCJW member. Through the use of their senses and their engagement, GHS’s members enable us to fulfill our mission of making the world a better place. We can’t repair the world if we don’t know what needs to be done, and we can’t know what needs to be done without the ability to communicate. And so, we find ourselves back at the GHS Website again.
So, was Cool Hand Luke correct when he spoke that famous quote in 1967? Maybe for him at that time, but not for Greater Houston Section today. What we’ve got is not a failure to communicate, but an opportunity to be the best informed we’ve ever been. Go to www.ncjwhouston.org and be in the know.
Shalom,
